Saskatoon Seeks Sophomore Success

They were purple people greeters on a mission.

The Saskatoon Berries entered the 2024 Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) season as a team with a strong vision, but no track record.

An effective marketing and social media campaign helped brand the Berries and introduce the expansion team to the city of Saskatoon. Saskatchewan’s largest city responded by welcoming the club with open arms, and their loyalty was met with a summer of great baseball memories.

Five Storylines We’re Watching in 2025

What a year it was for baseball in Saskatchewan.

From the grassroots growth that continues in almost every community to successes in high school and college programs to outstanding performances at national events, it was a year to remember.

We now look ahead to 2025 and some of the major storylines we’ll be keeping an eye on.

Top Newsmakers of 2024

It was a highly eventful year for the baseball scene in Alberta and Saskatchewan over these last 12 months.

Personal highs were reached, teams came out of nowhere to achieve fantastic results, and the game itself developed in new, exciting ways.

The Twelve Days of Baseball Christmas

As we celebrate the holiday season, we present to you something special: a Saskatchewan baseball-style edition of the 12 Days of Christmas!

Wapella’s Near-Perfect Summer

It was one of the most impressive performances the province of Saskatchewan has ever seen on a baseball field.

A team based out of Wapella, with a population of just 400, nearly ran the table for the entire summer of 1924, winning 16 of 20 tournaments they played in.

They also won three games against the famous Brandon Greys.

2024 Dugout Stories All-WCBL Team

What if the Western Canadian Baseball League had a team of all-stars that took part in the Major League Baseball Playoffs?

What started as a one-off idea in 2023 is now becoming a yearly tradition as we highlight the best-of-the-best from the WCBL.

Province of the Year

Baseball Sask is once again the envy of the Baseball Canada world.

For a record 10th time since 1986, the organization was named Province of the Year by the federal body during its annual awards banquet in November.

2024 SDS All-College Team

What a year it was for Saskatchewan baseball products who took their talents south of the border for their collegiate endeavours.

Several took home big awards from their schools and regions, while others captured major conference awards.

We take a look back at the top performances with our first annual SDS All-College Team.

Being the Culture

It is shaping up to be an experience the Regina Dusters won’t soon forget.

Created in 2020 to help give kids the chance to play baseball for a while longer, the Dusters have traveled to Las Vegas and Arizona for winter tournaments in the past.

But nothing will compare to what they have planned when the board the plane for Cuba in February 2025.

Howe-To Guide to Baseball

He had already earned the title “Mr. Hockey” for his work on the ice.

But Gordie Howe easily could’ve added the nickname “The Natural” for how he competed on the ball diamond, at the golf course and even in the bowling alley.

Such was the immense talent of the man who had broad enough shoulders to carry such accomplishments.

Some of the stories associated with his time in baseball are as legendary as his exploits at the rink.
