Honey for the Cubs

As Reese Brons crossed home plate to score the winning run to claim the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League title, there was an audible sigh of relief from the Saskatoon Cubs dugout.

And then … pandemonium as the celebration began.

After being knocked out in the semi-finals of the past two seasons, the Cubs were able to take the monkey off their backs in a big way with a 12-2 win over the Regina White Sox.

Golden Anniversary

Time sure flies when you’re having fun.

Elemer Jerkovits has found a home behind the plate and all around the diamond as an umpire in Saskatchewan for 50 years.

As he suited up to be a field umpire in the Regina Red Sox home opener against the Swift Current 57’s on May 29, the Regina native was overcome with the feeling of gratitude.

A lot has changed over the course of Carter Kopp’s career but Cairns Field has remained a consistent baseball backdrop.

Back in the days of the Saskatoon Yellow Jackets, who fielded a team in the Western Major League from 2002 to 2014, Kopp (Saskatoon, Sask.) recalls chasing foul balls in hopes of exchanging them for a bag of candy at the concession stand.
