Tyren Dorrance feels right at home with the Weyburn Beavers.
Having grown up just an hour and a half away in Alameda, the outfielder has become accustomed to having friends and family in attendance for games at Tom Laing Field as he’s now into his third year with the club.
He is coming off his sophomore season with York University, where he sported a .143 average with two doubles and a run batted in over 30 games.
Dorrance had previously spent two seasons with Taft College, where he hit .250 with 17 RBI in 53 games.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound southpaw has had to battle some nagging injuries, so spending his summers in the Western Canadian Baseball League isn’t just a homecoming but also an opportunity to get stronger.
It won’t hurt that Dorrance will also get to enjoy a home-cooked meal or two (steak is his favourite) while he’s home.
The Martin Academy product took some time recently to answer some questions via Instagram for our latest 7th Inning Stretch.
1. How excited are you for the upcoming Weyburn Beavers season?
I am really excited to get back to Weyburn for another summer. This league is a lot of fun to compete in and Weyburn has been very welcoming to me.
2. When you look at this team on paper, what do you see?
It looks like we have a lot of potential this summer. We have some good core members returning as well as some really good additions.
3. Do you have any goals or expectations of yourself heading into the summer?
Yes, I have the goal of making it to the WCBL All-Star Game this summer.
4. Looking back on your young career to this point, do you have any favourite memories or moments?
One of my favourite memories is when I won the Midget-AAA Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League MVP and the Top Hitter Award in 2019. That will be something I will never forget.
5. Conversely, what’s the biggest obstacle or hurdle you’ve had to overcome?
Unfortunately during my collegiate career, I’ve had to take off two different years because I’ve needed surgery on both of my hips. It was definitely a testing experience but staying determined to return to the field only made me appreciate the game more.
6. What’s your go-to walk-up tune?
I try to change it up every year, so for this summer I’m using “My Eyes” by Travis Scott.
7. Lastly, what’s that one piece of advice or words of wisdom you like to pass along to young athletes just starting out on their baseball journeys?
Anything is possible if you really want it enough. And don’t let others tell you what you will be able to achieve.
The Beavers start a four-game homestand this week with games against Moose Jaw, Regina and Saskatoon.
