7th Inning Stretch: Brody Alexandre

By JOE McFARLAND

He’s had a few years to perfect it, but as Brody Alexandre signs baseballs, hats and other memorabilia at Mitchell Field in Swift Current, he still feels it isn’t top-tier.

The 57s hometown hero made his first appearance with the team back in 2019 as a high school affiliated player, collecting one hit in two at-bats.

Since then, he’s played in three full seasons with the 57s while also attending Trinidad State College.

The 6-foot-3, 205-pound first baseman is coming off a solid spring with the Trojans, hitting .268 in 36 games with three home runs and 23 runs batted in.

With the 57s this summer, he’s hitting .242 with three home runs and 18 RBI in 27 games while earning himself a spot in the 2024 WCBL Home Run Derby and All-Star Game.

Our Ian Wilson took a family trip to Saskatchewan earlier this summer and caught up with the left-hitting slugger prior to the All-Star Weekend.

1. Give us an assessment on your season so far and what you’ve seen out of your game?

I had a little bit of a tough start to the season, but once we got settled in, I felt like I got comfortable in the box, things started to turn around. I started putting the ball in play a lot more and it seemed like, for a little bit there, I just couldn’t get out. It’s been going pretty good.

2. You’re a hometown guy playing for the 57s. What’s it been like just to play in front of a lot of familiar faces and where you grew up?

Yeah, I got to play on this field in high school and everything. Nothing beats getting to come home and play in front of the hometown crowd, get to see all the familiar faces, friends and family there. Nothing beats that.

3. Did you have any goals for yourself entering the season?

I had a couple of personal goals. For me, it’s just trying to cut down on strikeouts a little bit more and really focus on putting the ball in play, especially with two strikes. Just trying to do whatever I can to get on base and help the team.

4. Who was your favourite MLB player growing up?

Josh Donaldson. When he went over to the Blue Jays there, I kind of fell in love with him. I tried to base my game off him growing up.

6. What is your favourite ballpark food?

I have to go with our “BurDog” here. It’s a hamburger and then they take a hot dog and cut it up and put it in there as well. So you get a little bit of everything there.

7. What does the game of baseball mean to you?

The game of baseball means everything to me. I’ve been around it my whole life. It’s kind of the place I go to clear my mind and just have fun. A place I can come out here, don’t think and just go have fun.

The 57s are home to Medicine Hat for a pair of games this week before embarking on a three-game roadtrip. They finish the WCBL regular season at home August 5 against the Mavericks.
