It’s about a four-hour drive from Muenster to Swift Current, but Adam Korte’s family and friends are more than happy to make the trek when they know he’s starting.
They just might have to do it a little more often this summer.
The right-hander will be tabbed to take on some of the workload for the 57’s as they look to get back into the playoff picture after finishing 2024 at the bottom of the East Division standings.
They will have several familiar faces on the roster including Korte, who went 3-5 with a 5.62 earned-run average in 16 games last season, striking out 49 batters in 64 innings pitched.
The 6-foot-1, 195-pound hurler is coming off his sophomore season at Dawson Community College, where he registered a 6-1 record and a 5.05 ERA in 13 appearances, good enough to be named to the MONDAK All-Conference Team.
The Baseball Sask and Going Yard Academy product is set to transfer to Peru State College for the 2025-2026 collegiate season.
In the meantime, Korte will be looking to contribute to the 57’s in a big way, and helps us kick off the 2025 WCBL season of 7th Inning Stretch.
1. How excited are you to get things rolling this summer with the Swift Current 57’s?
I’m really excited. It’s a really fun league to be in. We get to travel to all different types of places and meet a bunch of people. It’s nice.
2. Being from Muenster, what does it mean to you play in front of friends and family?
It means a lot. Just being able to play in front of a tonne of people and have a lot of family and friends come out and watch. I even have some friends and cousins play in the league and all that, so I get to play against them. It’s a really good experience. It’s really nice.
3. Looking back on last year with the 57’s, how did you feel about your performance?
For my first year and getting my feet wet, it felt like it went relatively well. I was pretty happy with it. I was a freshman coming in and I was playing against a bunch of guys older than me. I’m a little older now so I’m hoping to improve upon that.
4. Did you have that moment of awe when you stepped foot on the rubber at that first home game, knowing you had played there before but not on this big of a stage?
The 57’s actually asked me, probably a couple days before the season started, to come out because they needed more pitching. So I said, “Why not?” I packed my bags the next day and went down there. I remember my first start against Fort McMurray and it was like “Whoa, this has been my goal for a little while.” It was a pretty cool moment for me.
5. What have you been working on to become an even bigger piece for the 57’s this summer?
Yeah, you know, I think I’ve worked a lot on my pitches all-around. I’m way more in the zone than I was last summer, so I think that’s going to help me out too. I always think, “Don’t hurt yourself, make them hurt you.” That’s what I’ve been focusing on.
6. You have a new head coach in last year’s assistant, Ruddy Estrella. You also have a new pitching coach in former 57’s great Kenny Jinks. What are you hoping to learn from him?
I’ll have lots of time to pick his brain on what works in this league because he was really successful. Just throughout the season, I’ll ask him different things. It will be a good experience. I’m a big Kenny Jinks fan, so I was excited when I saw he was going to come coach for us.
7. What would it mean to you to capture a WCBL championship to Swift Current?
It would mean a lot. I’m always on underdog teams, and I look at the 57’s as an underdog team. We have a good group of guys and I think it would mean a lot to the city to bring back that winning culture that they used to have back in the days when they were the Swift Current Indians.
