Saskatoon Seeks Sophomore Success

They were purple people greeters on a mission.

The Saskatoon Berries entered the 2024 Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) season as a team with a strong vision, but no track record.

An effective marketing and social media campaign helped brand the Berries and introduce the expansion team to the city of Saskatoon. Saskatchewan’s largest city responded by welcoming the club with open arms, and their loyalty was met with a summer of great baseball memories.

Wapella’s Near-Perfect Summer

It was one of the most impressive performances the province of Saskatchewan has ever seen on a baseball field.

A team based out of Wapella, with a population of just 400, nearly ran the table for the entire summer of 1924, winning 16 of 20 tournaments they played in.

They also won three games against the famous Brandon Greys.

Province of the Year

Baseball Sask is once again the envy of the Baseball Canada world.

For a record 10th time since 1986, the organization was named Province of the Year by the federal body during its annual awards banquet in November.

In a playing career that covered more than three decades, John Donaldson traveled to hundreds of cities across North America, where he collected 413 wins and recorded 5,081 strikeouts.

Donaldson struck out more than 500 batters in three straight years and he registered 14 no-hitters, including one that dazzled baseball watchers in Saskatchewan.
