The Regina Red Sox have some unfinished business heading into the 2025 Western Canadian Baseball League playoffs.
After finishing at the top of the East Division standings in 2024, they were unceremoniously swept in the first round by the fourth-ranked Moose Jaw Miller Express, who went onto the championship series against the eventual champion Okotoks Dawgs.
It’s a memory that veterans like Brady Bye would like to see vanish with a long playoff run this summer.
The hometown product and Martin Academy alum admits he had his struggles last summer, and through a lot of hard work, has become a key piece for the Red Sox.
He’s hitting amongst the league leaders in batting average (.353), home runs (eight) and runs batted in (35), and is fresh off being named a WCBL All-Star, where he also represented the Red Sox in the Home Run Derby.
With a playoff spot already sewn up, the Point University junior has his sights set on duplicating that success in the postseason, which will be as an underdog against either the Saskatoon Berries or Medicine Hat Mavericks.
Bye joined us on Alberta Dugout Stories: The Podcast to talk about his journey in the game and his season so far, which led us to our latest 7th Inning Stretch.
1. Playoffs are just around the corner. How excited are you to get the second season of the summer underway?
Yeah, I’m very excited. I think there’s some stuff left over from last season that I’d like to get back as well. So I’m looking forward to going out there and playing some hard baseball.
2. You mentioned last year and that early exit against Moose Jaw after being the top team in the East Division. What’s been the main message from the coaching staff and veterans heading into another playoff push?
I think the message is just that we know we have the talent in the room. We’re not too worried about the regular season right now, but once we hit playoff time, it means business. We have some stuff left over from last year and we know that it’s unfinished from last season so we need to pick it up.
3. What is it about this year’s team that makes you believe you can take that next step?
I think for us, we have a lot of character. We have a lot of guys that are ride-or-die for our teammates and stuff like that. I think when it comes down to the line, that will give us the upper hand in a playoff situation.
4. You’ve had a heck of a season on a personal level. What’s been working for you?
You know what, I’ve honestly just been showing up every day and putting an eye on the barrel of my bat. Just trying to poke it in the eye and I’ve just had that mindset all summer. It seems to be working so I’m just rolling with it.
5. You’re looking like you’re having a lot of fun out there as well, whether it be through getting mic’d up or that kind of thing. What’s been your goal that way?
This is my home and I grew up here, so I just always try to show up with a good attitude. The fans and everyone is really good to me and my teammates, we have a good group of guys. So it’s pretty cool to show up and be able to play what we love and have fun at the same time. Everyone’s kind of just hanging out, the fans are getting into it and giving you kudos and stuff, too. It’s hard not to show up with a smile on your face every day.
6. You were able to represent your hometown team at the WCBL Home Run Derby and All-Star Game. What did that mean to you?
Oh man. It meant a lot just because last summer was a bit of a different story for me. So I’ve had to work really hard to be able to improve and see a better result. When I stepped foot in there, it’s just a reflection of what you put into it and you’re finally getting something out of it. It was awesome.
7. What would it mean to you to bring home a WCBL championship with the Regina Red Sox?
Oh man, it would mean a lot to me. I’ve been around this league for a long time. I got to be around it in high school and never really got too deep into the playoffs so it’s something I’d really like to do. It would be such a cool experience to share with all my teammates, too.
